Jungle Trekking Itinerary
Day 1: Bukit Lawang – Rainforest Trekking – Jungle Camping
08:30 AM – Meet Your Guide in Bukit Lawang
After breakfast, meet your local jungle guide at your accommodation or the agreed meeting point in Bukit Lawang.
Your guide will introduce the trekking team and explain the route, safety procedures, wildlife-viewing guidelines and camping arrangements. You will also receive advice about walking on steep or slippery ground, drinking enough water and protecting your belongings from rain.
Once everyone is ready, begin your adventure toward the rainforest trails of Gunung Leuser National Park.
09:00 AM – Begin Your Jungle Trekking Adventure
Enter the tropical rainforest and leave the village behind as the trail leads into a landscape of tall trees, dense vegetation, vines, ferns and natural forest sounds.
Your guide will introduce the rainforest ecosystem and explain how different plants and animals depend on one another. You may learn about the role of trees in maintaining the forest environment, the importance of rivers and the conservation challenges facing Sumatra’s wildlife.
The trail can include steep climbs, descents, tree roots, muddy paths and uneven terrain. Your guide will set a suitable pace and arrange breaks when necessary.
10:00 AM – Wildlife Tracking and Orangutan Observation
One of the most exciting parts of jungle trekking in Bukit Lawang is looking for Sumatran orangutans.
With your guide’s help, watch the forest canopy and look for signs of wildlife. Orangutans may be seen feeding, resting or moving between trees, but their location and activity change naturally.
Other wildlife you may encounter includes:
- Thomas’s leaf monkeys.
- Long-tailed macaques.
- Pig-tailed macaques.
- Gibbons.
- Hornbills and other tropical birds.
- Reptiles, insects and other rainforest species.
Your guide will explain animal behavior and help you observe wildlife responsibly. All encounters depend on natural conditions, and no wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.
12:00 PM – Lunch in the Rainforest
Stop at a suitable resting place to enjoy a freshly prepared Indonesian lunch.
Depending on the arrangements, lunch may include rice, vegetables, noodles, eggs, tempeh or other local dishes. Seasonal tropical fruit may also be provided.
After lunch, take time to rest, drink water and appreciate the peaceful rainforest surroundings before continuing the trek.
01:00 PM – Continue Exploring Gunung Leuser National Park
After lunch, continue along forest trails and explore more of the rainforest.
Your guide may introduce interesting trees, tropical plants, insects and other natural features. You may also learn about traditional plant knowledge and the relationship between local communities and the surrounding forest.
Continue looking for wildlife while enjoying the sounds of birds and gibbons in the distance. The route will depend on the group’s fitness, weather, trail conditions and suitable locations for wildlife observation.
Take photographs where appropriate, but avoid disturbing animals or damaging vegetation.
03:30 PM – Arrive at the Jungle Campsite
In the late afternoon, reach a suitable camping location, preferably near a river or stream where the terrain and conditions allow.
Your guide and support team will organize the campsite and prepare the sleeping arrangements. Camping equipment should be confirmed as part of your selected package.
Enjoy a break after the day’s hike. If a safe location is available and your guide approves, you may relax beside the river or enjoy the surrounding scenery.
Swimming is optional and should only be considered where local conditions have been assessed as safe.
05:00 PM – Relax and Enjoy the Jungle Atmosphere
Spend some time relaxing at camp, enjoying a hot drink if provided, or learning more about the rainforest from your guide.
As the light begins to fade, the sounds of the forest change. Insects and frogs may become more noticeable, and you may hear other nocturnal animals in the distance.
This is an opportunity to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the jungle away from busy roads, buildings and city life.
06:30 PM – Indonesian Dinner at the Campsite
Your trekking team will prepare dinner using the agreed camping arrangements.
Dinner may include rice, vegetables, tempeh, tofu, eggs or other local dishes. Dietary requirements should be communicated before the tour so suitable options can be discussed.
Enjoy dinner with your guide and trekking companions while sharing stories about the day’s experience.
07:30 PM – Evening in the Rainforest
After dinner, relax at the campsite and listen to the natural sounds around you.
Your guide may share information about local culture, wildlife conservation and the experience of guiding visitors through the Sumatran rainforest.
Please follow the guide’s instructions after dark and avoid approaching wildlife or walking away from camp alone.
Settle into your tent or other confirmed camping shelter for the night.
Overnight: Jungle campsite in the Bukit Lawang rainforest.
Meals: Lunch and dinner.
Day 2: Morning Jungle Trek – Return to Bukit Lawang – River Tubing
07:00 AM – Wake Up in the Jungle
Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest and enjoy the cool morning atmosphere.
Your trekking team will prepare breakfast, which may include simple Indonesian dishes, bread, fruit, tea or coffee according to the package.
After breakfast, pack your belongings and ensure that the campsite is clean before continuing the adventure.
08:00 AM – Morning Rainforest Exploration
Continue trekking through the forest with your local guide.
The morning provides another opportunity to appreciate the tropical rainforest and look for wildlife. Depending on natural activity, you may observe monkeys in the canopy, hear gibbons calling or see tropical birds moving between trees.
Your guide will explain more about the forest ecosystem, wildlife behavior and the importance of protecting the natural habitat of the Sumatran orangutan.
The route may involve steep or slippery ground, so take your time and follow your guide’s instructions.
10:00 AM – Rest Break and Tropical Fruit
Stop at a suitable location to rest, drink water and enjoy tropical fruit or snacks if included.
Use this opportunity to appreciate the rainforest scenery, take photographs and discuss the wildlife and plants you have encountered.
10:30 AM – Continue Trekking Toward the River
Continue along the planned route toward the river and the return point near Bukit Lawang.
Depending on trail conditions and the group’s pace, this section may involve further climbs, descents and forest paths. Your guide will select the appropriate route according to current conditions.
Take breaks as needed and keep your belongings secure.
12:00 PM – Lunch During the Return Journey
Enjoy lunch at a suitable location along the route or near the river, depending on the day’s arrangements.
After lunch, collect your belongings, check the campsite and resting areas for rubbish, and prepare for the final part of your jungle adventure.
01:00 PM – Traditional River Tubing on the Bohorok River
If river tubing is included in your confirmed package and the conditions are suitable, begin the return journey along the Bohorok River using the locally arranged tubing equipment and assistance.
Enjoy the river scenery and the surrounding tropical landscape as you travel back toward Bukit Lawang.
River tubing is subject to weather, water levels, current strength and a safety assessment. If conditions are unsuitable, tubing will not take place and an alternative return arrangement will be made.
02:00–03:00 PM – Arrive Back in Bukit Lawang
Return to Bukit Lawang village and conclude your two-day jungle trekking adventure.
After saying goodbye to your guide and trekking team, you can relax at your accommodation, enjoy a refreshing shower or have a drink beside the river.
You will leave with memories of the Sumatran rainforest, its wildlife, the jungle campsite and the local guiding experience.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch.
Tour concludes: Bukit Lawang village.
All times are estimates. The actual schedule depends on weather, wildlife activity, trail conditions, river safety and the group’s fitness.
