This experience is ideal for travelers who want to explore the rainforest, search for wild orangutans, discover tropical plants, and learn about the unique wildlife and ecosystems of North Sumatra.
Accompanied by an experienced local trekking guide, you will venture along natural forest trails beneath towering trees, listen to the sounds of the jungle, and look for fascinating wildlife in its natural environment. Depending on the conditions, you may encounter Sumatran orangutans, Thomas’s leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, gibbons, hornbills, and other tropical birds.
Throughout the day, you will enjoy a combination of wildlife observation, rainforest exploration, rest breaks, and a freshly prepared lunch. For an exciting finish, your itinerary may include an optional traditional tube-rafting journey down the Bohorok River, subject to river conditions, safety, and the package you book.

Detailed full-day itinerary
Suggested schedule: 08:00 AM – 03:30/04:00 PM · Approximately 6–7 hours of rainforest adventure, with breaks and return journey

08:30 AM – Meet your guide and prepare for the adventure
Begin your day at your accommodation in Bukit Lawang or an agreed meeting point. Meet your local trekking guide, receive a safety briefing, and prepare your water, walking shoes, and personal belongings.
Your guide will explain the planned route, rainforest conditions, responsible wildlife viewing, and the importance of respecting the natural environment.

Enter the rainforest
Start your trek along forest trails in the Gunung Leuser National Park area. Walk beneath tall tropical trees and through lush vegetation while your guide introduces you to the rainforest ecosystem.
Learn about the forest canopy, vines, roots, native plants, and the interconnected relationships between the rainforest’s plants and animals. The trail may include uphill sections, muddy ground, tree roots, and uneven terrain.

Search for wild Sumatran orangutans
One of the most memorable parts of the adventure is looking for orangutans in their natural habitat. With your guide’s knowledge of the forest, observe the canopy and surrounding vegetation for movement, feeding activity, and other signs of wildlife.
If orangutans are encountered, your guide will explain their behavior, diet, family relationships, and role in rainforest regeneration. You may also spot other primates and tropical birds during this part of the walk.
All wildlife remains free to move through the forest, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Explore wildlife and rainforest biodiversity
Continue through the forest at a comfortable pace, stopping when appropriate to observe wildlife and appreciate the surrounding landscape.
Look and listen for Thomas’s leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, pig-tailed macaques, gibbons, hornbills, and other bird species. Your guide will share knowledge of animal calls, feeding habits, movement through the canopy, and the challenges facing endangered wildlife in Sumatra.
Take photographs responsibly without feeding, touching, chasing, or disturbing the animals.

Tropical fruit break
Take a short rest at a suitable location selected by your guide. Enjoy seasonal tropical fruits, if included in the package, and drink water to stay hydrated in the warm and humid conditions.
This is a good opportunity to relax, ask questions about the rainforest, and learn about the traditional uses of selected plants. Plant knowledge is shared for educational purposes, and wild plants should not be consumed without expert guidance.

Continue deeper into the jungle
Follow your guide along a suitable forest route, exploring additional sections of the rainforest where conditions and the group’s ability allow.
Learn about rainforest conservation, seed dispersal, the importance of mature trees, and the threats caused by habitat loss. Your guide may point out insects, butterflies, unusual roots, and other details that are easy to miss when walking too quickly.
The exact route depends on weather, trail conditions, wildlife activity, and the group’s pace.

12:00 PM – Enjoy lunch in the rainforest
Pause in an appropriate resting area for a jungle lunch prepared or arranged by your trekking team. Depending on the package, the meal may include Indonesian-style food such as nasi goreng, rice, vegetables, or other suitable dishes.
Enjoy your meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the rainforest. Your guide can also explain local food traditions and how communities around Bukit Lawang connect with the surrounding natural environment.
Please take all rubbish out of the forest and leave the resting area clean.

Afternoon rainforest exploration
After lunch, continue your adventure through the forest, with time to observe additional wildlife, appreciate the landscape, and learn more about the rainforest’s ecology.
Depending on the chosen route, you may visit a suitable stream or scenic resting spot. A swim is not automatically included and should only be considered if your guide confirms that the location is safe and local conditions permit it.

Return toward Bukit Lawang
Begin the return portion of the adventure. Depending on the route and your booked package, the return may include a traditional river-tubing ride on the Bohorok River, locally known as the “jungle taxi.”
If tubing is included and conditions are suitable, your team will arrange the necessary equipment and instructions. Enjoy views of the rainforest and riverside landscape as you travel back toward the village. If river conditions are unsafe or tubing is not included, return by the agreed walking route instead.

03:30–04:00 PM – Finish your jungle trekking adventure
Return to Bukit Lawang and your agreed finishing point. Take time to relax after a rewarding day in the rainforest and share your favorite moments with your guide.
The rest of the afternoon is free for you to enjoy the village, relax by the river, or have dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Can I see wild orangutans on a full-day trek?
Bukit Lawang is well known for opportunities to observe Sumatran orangutans, but they are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will help you look for wildlife while respecting animal welfare.
Is a full-day trek suitable for beginners?
It can be suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness, but this is a genuine rainforest hike, not a paved nature walk. Expect humidity, uneven ground, tree roots, and potentially steep or muddy sections. Tell your guide about your experience and fitness before the tour.
Is river tubing included?
It depends on the package booked. Many local operators offer tubing as part of their one-day trek, but it should be confirmed in advance and is always subject to river conditions
Can I join if I am staying in Medan?
Yes, but transport needs careful planning. Bukit Lawang is approximately 90 km northwest of Medan, and the road journey is typically around three hours each way.
For a full-day trek, we recommend arriving in Bukit Lawang the day before so you can enjoy the complete experience without a rushed transfer.
What happens if it rains?
Rain is part of the tropical rainforest environment. Light rain may allow trekking to continue, but heavy rain, flash-flood risks, or dangerous trail conditions may require a route change, delay, or cancellation.
