A massive flash flood swept all the town and the village of Bukit lawang in 2003. The whole bukit lawang village was flatten and washed with so many casualties. Also the Orangutan Rehabilitation facilities were also destroyed.
The rehabilitation was already attracted a lot of tourist locally and internationally. There was a feeding time at the platform was set up little further away, the newly introduced back to the nature orangutans were still being fed in regular basis. Due to the so many local tourist coming and flocking to this feeding area which increasing the vulnerability for the orangutans, it was time to rebuilt the facilities else where and limited access to tourist.
