Berastagi Karo Highland is a Town Below the volcano
Berastagi is a city below the Sibayak Volcano. It sits on the 1300m above sea level. The temperature ,ostly cool with nice breeze during day time but quite cold at night. it could reached up to 16 degeress. Due to the nice temperature and a very scenic area, it attracts a lot of local tourist from medan city, binjai city, langkat regian and all surrounding area.especially during the long weekend. Berastagi will always full of local tourist. There are plenty of bongalows and villa also many different type of hotels to suit everyone budget. Karo Tribe and Tradition | Karo Village Lingga | Karo Village Dokan
Berastagi is part of KARO HIGHLAND region. Berastagi is a District. The native people from the KARO REGION is KARONESE or KARO PEOLPE or KARO TRIBE. Karo tribe has a very rich cultural and traditions values. Before the religions was introduced by Dutch during colonialism, Karo tribe was actually conducting the ANIMISM. Tecnically the Culture is the ANIMISM itself. There are many retual involve in the tradition such as Wedding,Funeral,grand opening new house,harvest season or planting season or annual celebration. If you are lucky, you might stumble to one of them. You are mostly welcome to observing it.
There are few old Karo Villages reamin on this region. Due to the modernizition, those houses are no longer in use, but it still well maintained by the local people and local governmant. Take your time to visit one of the at the LINGGA VILLAGE or DOKAN VILLAGE. These two village that still have few traditional karonese houses that still perfectly intact. You could visit this LINGGA VILLAGE on your way to look closer the Mount Sinabung Volcano and the abondaned village caused by the Mount Sinabung past Eruption

MOUNT SINABUNG
There 2 actives Volcanoes in this region. Mount Sinabung and MOunt Sibayak. Mount Sinabung was fisrt eruption after it slept for so long on 2010. It keep erupting on the small scale until lastly was on 2022.
MOUNT SIBAYAK AND SUNRISE HIKE
Mount Sibayak is closest one to the Berastagi district. Mount Sibayak also still reamin calm and safe to climb. A lot younger people from the city area make their way to the mountain for hike. As it is only 2200m high, it is suitable for most people. it is not really difficult and easy to climb. some people even camp at the top of mount sibayak. It is recommended to go early in the morning for the hike aimed for the sunrise. This is also another reason why Berastagi very popular. Its stop point for the mountain hike and preparation.
Below the Mount Sibayak, there is hotspring. Local People building ponds on these Hotspring. If you are interested, you could try one of the ponds on your way down from the Mount Sibayak. Some people don’t bothered with the hike, they just go there for the hotspring.
LAU KAWAR LAKE | DANAU LAU KAWAR
Below mount Sinabung on the west side, the opposite of the lava flow, there is a fresh water lake, its called DANAU LAU KAWAR. some local people go to this lake. it sit behind and below the mountain and the weather here is little bit cool and nice breeze. there are some villas and bungalows on this spot. popular for the local tourist for quiteness.
SIKULIKAP WATERFALL
On your way from medan city, halfway from the city, right at the border of the Karo REGION with the DELI SERDANG REGION, there is a waterafall. This waterafall is called SI KULIKAP waterfall. The waterfall is surrounding by cliffs, not possible to go further into the bottom of the waterfall. Viewing it from short distance at the edge of the cliff giving a nice view of waterfall.
SIPISO PISO WATERFALL
Sipiso piso waterfall is at the west end of karo region bordered directly with the lake toba on the MEREK DISTRICT. Sipiso piso waterfall is the highest waterall in the north Sumatra province. The water droped direct to small river below and flow to the lake toba and fills it. The waterfall height is about 120m. Some people going further down to the bottom of the waterfall for the sensation of the waterfall blast. it takes about 30 minutes to go down one hour to get back up. A lot of tourist heading to lake toba via berastagi or after the volcano climb make a stop over at this waterfall for a closer look. It is also popular destination for the local tourist
