Travel through the North Sumatran countryside, passing rural villages, tropical vegetation, plantations, and traditional communities. As the road approaches the rainforest, the atmosphere becomes quieter and more remote.

Tangkahan is known for its rainforest setting, rivers, and elephant conservation activities. After arrival, check in to your riverside or jungle lodge and settle into your surroundings.

Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a gentle walk around the local village, relax beside the river, or take in the natural scenery before dinner.

  • Airport pickup and private transfer.

  • Scenic journey through the North Sumatran countryside.

  • Introduction to Tangkahan’s rainforest environment.

  • Stay at MEGA INN – Tangkahan

Day 2 — Tangkahan elephant experience and rainforest exploration

Destination: Tangkahan

Overnight: Tangkahan

Wake to the sounds of birds and the flowing river before enjoying breakfast at your lodge. Today is dedicated to discovering Tangkahan’s natural environment and learning about elephant conservation.

Join a locally guided visit to an elephant conservation facility, subject to availability and its current animal-welfare policies. Learn about the elephants, their care, their history, and the challenges of protecting wildlife in Sumatra.

Activities should prioritize observation, education, and the welfare of the elephants. Any direct contact must follow the facility’s current ethical guidelines; elephant riding or bathing should not be assumed to be included.

Later, explore the surrounding rainforest on a guided walk. Discover tropical plants, listen for birds, observe the river ecosystem, and learn how local communities live alongside the forest. If river conditions and safety permit, you may enjoy a swim in an appropriate designated area.

Return to your lodge for a relaxed evening and a traditional Indonesian meal.

Highlights

  • Responsible elephant conservation experience.

  • Guided rainforest and riverside exploration.

  • Introduction to local forest plants and wildlife.

  • Natural scenery and village life.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, according to the selected package.

Day 3 — Tangkahan to Bukit Lawang

Destination: Bukit Lawang

Overnight: Bukit Lawang

After breakfast, leave Tangkahan and travel toward Bukit Lawang, a small rainforest village at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park.

The journey takes you through countryside and plantation areas before reaching the green river valley of Bukit Lawang. Check into your accommodation near the Bahorok River and take time to relax.

In the afternoon, explore the village with your guide. Walk along riverside paths, discover small local shops, observe daily village life, and learn about the area’s relationship with rainforest conservation and responsible tourism.

Your guide will also explain the upcoming jungle trek, including trail conditions, appropriate clothing, safety procedures, wildlife observation, and what to pack.

Enjoy dinner and prepare for your rainforest adventure.

Highlights

  • Scenic overland journey to Bukit Lawang.

  • Riverside village exploration.

  • Introduction to Gunung Leuser National Park.

  • Trek preparation and meeting with your local guide.

Day 4 — Jungle trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park day-1

Destination: Gunung Leuser National Park

Overnight: Jungle campsite

Today is one of the main highlights of your Sumatra adventure. After breakfast, meet your licensed local trekking guide and begin exploring the tropical rainforest around Bukit Lawang.

Enter the forest on foot, following established trekking routes through dense vegetation, towering trees, vines, and humid tropical undergrowth. Your guide will help you understand the rainforest ecosystem and look for signs of wildlife.

With patience and a little luck, you may encounter wild Sumatran orangutans moving through the canopy. Other possible sightings include Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, gibbons, hornbills, and colorful forest birds. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals move freely through their natural habitat.

Throughout the trek, your guide will explain the importance of protecting this globally significant rainforest, its biodiversity, and the habitats of endangered species.

Stop for lunch in a suitable forest location, then continue toward your designated campsite. Depending on the route and weather, the trail may include steep sections, muddy ground, roots, and uneven terrain.

At camp, help settle into the jungle environment, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and listen to the sounds of the forest as night falls.

Highlights

  • Guided trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park.

  • Opportunities to observe wild orangutans and other rainforest wildlife.

  • Tropical plants, forest ecology, and conservation learning.

  • Dinner and overnight camping in the designated forest area.

Meals: unch, and dinner.

Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, depending on the selected route and weather.

Day 5 — Morning jungle exploration, river tubing and return to Bukit Lawang

Destination: Bukit Lawang

Overnight: Bukit Lawang

Wake to the sounds of the rainforest and enjoy breakfast at camp. After packing your equipment, continue exploring the forest with your guide, learning more about tropical plants, animal behavior, and the ecology of Gunung Leuser.

There may be further opportunities to observe wildlife, depending on animal movements and the trail conditions. Your guide will maintain a respectful distance from animals and follow responsible wildlife-viewing practices.

After lunch, begin the return journey toward Bukit Lawang. Depending on the selected package, river conditions, and safety assessment, the final stretch may include traditional tube rafting along the Bahorok River.

Float downstream with your local river team, passing lush vegetation and enjoying a different perspective of the rainforest landscape. If water levels or currents make tubing unsafe, an alternative return arrangement will be made.

Arrive back at your accommodation in the afternoon. Enjoy a shower, relax by the river, and celebrate your jungle adventure.

Highlights

  • Further rainforest exploration.

  • Learning about wildlife and tropical plants.

  • River tubing when conditions permit.

  • Comfortable overnight stay after the trek.

Day 6 — Bukit Lawang to Berastagi via the Karo Highlands

The journey passes rural settlements, green hills, farms, and changing landscapes as you gain elevation. Depending on the route and available time, stop at scenic viewpoints or a traditional Karo village.

On arrival in Berastagi, visit the local fruit and vegetable market, where you can discover tropical produce, locally grown vegetables, flowers, spices, and seasonal fruits. Berastagi is particularly known for its agricultural produce and cool climate.

If time permits, visit a traditional Karo village to learn about local architecture and customs. Your guide can introduce you to the region’s distinct cultural heritage.

Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening before the early start for Mount Sibayak.

  • Berastagi fruit and vegetable market.

  • Karo culture and traditional village life.

Rise early for a guided hike on Mount Sibayak, one of North Sumatra’s best-known volcanic destinations.

Travel to the trailhead and begin the ascent in the cool mountain air. Follow the mountain path toward the volcanic summit, where you may see rocky terrain, steaming fumaroles, and unusual volcanic formations. When the weather is clear, the summit offers impressive views across the surrounding highlands and toward nearby Mount Sinabung.

A sunrise arrival is possible when departure time, trail conditions, and weather allow, but sunrise and summit access cannot be guaranteed. Your guide will select a suitable route and turnaround point based on conditions and your group’s ability.

After descending, return to Berastagi for breakfast or a late morning meal. Later, visit natural hot springs in the surrounding highlands, where you can relax after the hike if facilities are open.

The remainder of the day is flexible. Enjoy a café, explore the town, or rest at your hotel.

After breakfast, set out with your local guide to explore Samosir Island’s cultural attractions and scenic villages.

Begin with Tomok, known for traditional Batak houses, local handicrafts, and the historic tomb of King Sidabutar. Learn about Batak customs, ancestral traditions, and the cultural significance of the village.

Continue to Ambarita and Huta Siallagan, a historic village associated with traditional Batak governance. See the famous stone chairs and learn about the village’s history and customary justice traditions from your guide.

Depending on local availability, you may also visit a museum, see traditional Batak architecture, or learn about ulos, the handwoven cloth used in ceremonies and cultural exchanges.

Destination: Aceh Singkil

Overnight: Singkil area

After breakfast, begin the overland journey from Samosir Island toward Aceh Singkil, the coastal gateway for Pulau Banyak.

This is one of the longest travel days of the tour. Leave early, cross back to the mainland by ferry, and continue by private vehicle through changing landscapes, rural towns, and the countryside of western Sumatra.

The route requires patience and flexibility. Road conditions, traffic, ferry schedules, and weather may affect the total journey time, so this day is primarily dedicated to transport rather than extensive sightseeing.

Make suitable stops for meals, refreshments, and rest along the way. Upon arrival in the Singkil area, check into your accommodation and prepare for the boat transfer to Pulau Banyak the following day.

Your tour team will confirm the boat departure, luggage arrangements, and any supplies needed for your island stay.

Highlights

  • Scenic overland journey through western Sumatra.

  • Local roadside food stops and rural scenery.

  • Arrival in Aceh Singkil, gateway to the Banyak Islands.

  • Preparation for the tropical island adventure.

Day 11 — Boat transfer to Pulau Banyak and tropical island escape

Destination: Pulau Banyak

Overnight: Pulau Banyak

After an early breakfast, transfer to the departure point in Singkil for the boat journey to Pulau Banyak.

The Banyak Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Aceh, known for their tropical beaches, clear waters in favorable conditions, scattered islands, and peaceful atmosphere. They offer a striking contrast to the rainforest and highlands you have experienced earlier in the tour.

Travel by scheduled passenger boat or arranged charter, depending on availability and the package. On arrival, transfer to your island accommodation and settle in.

Depending on the boat schedule and weather, spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach, swimming in a suitable area, or exploring the nearby shoreline. Enjoy the sound of the waves and the slower rhythm of island life.

In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared meal and watch the sunset over the sea, weather permitting.

Highlights

  • Boat transfer from Singkil to Pulau Banyak.

  • Tropical beaches and island scenery.

  • Swimming or shoreline exploration when conditions are safe.

  • Relaxed island accommodation and sunset views.

Day 12 — Pulau Banyak island hopping, snorkeling and beach relaxation

Destination: Pulau Banyak

Overnight: Pulau Banyak

Enjoy a full day exploring the beautiful island environment of Pulau Banyak.

After breakfast, meet your local boat operator and discuss the day’s conditions. If the sea is calm and the weather is suitable, embark on an island-hopping excursion to selected nearby islands and beaches.

Discover secluded stretches of sand, enjoy the tropical scenery, and swim or snorkel at appropriate locations where visibility, currents, and marine conditions permit. Your guide will help choose suitable stops based on safety, tides, and the boat’s range.

For travelers who prefer a slower day, there is also time to relax at the accommodation, walk along the beach, take photographs, or enjoy a peaceful picnic on an approved beach.

Marine life and coral reefs should be observed without touching or disturbing them. Visits to sensitive habitats must follow local conservation requirements.

Return to your accommodation in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner and a final evening in the tropical island surroundings.

Highlights

  • Guided island hopping, weather permitting.

  • Beach exploration and tropical scenery.

  • Optional snorkeling and swimming.

  • Relaxed island time away from busy tourist areas.

Day 13 — Return by boat to Singkil

Destination: Singkil

Overnight: Singkil area

Enjoy breakfast and a final opportunity to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of Pulau Banyak before preparing for your return boat journey.

Depending on the scheduled departure and sea conditions, you may have time for a short beach walk or photographs before transferring to the harbor.

Board your boat back to Singkil. Boat schedules may vary, and departures can be affected by weather, sea conditions, and local transport arrangements.

On arrival, transfer to your accommodation near Singkil and relax after the journey. Your tour team will confirm the next day’s departure time and arrange the private road transfer back to Medan.

Highlights

  • Final moments on Pulau Banyak.

  • Return boat journey to the mainland.

  • Overnight near Singkil to make the final travel day more manageable.

Day 14 — Singkil to your hotel in Medan or hotel near the airport

Destination: Medan
Tour concludes: Medan or Kualanamu International Airport

After breakfast, depart Singkil by private vehicle for the return journey to Medan city or Hotel near the airport

This is another substantial overland travel day, so an early start is strongly recommended. Enjoy the changing scenery as you travel back through the countryside toward North Sumatra’s main city.

Important departure advice: Because the drive from Singkil to Medan is long and road conditions can be unpredictable, we recommend staying overnight in Medan and flying the following day. A flight the next morning is the safer choice if missing your departure would be costly.

There are many hotels you could choose near the airport. Choosing to stay near the airport is the best option due to the short distance travel for your flight.

Here is the list of the hotel you could choose near the airport:

  • Anara sky Kuala Namu is located at the Airport Building
  • D’prima Hotel: Located 7 minutes from the airport
  • Wing Hotel
  • Quadrant Hotel
  • The crew Hotel Kuala Namu

Your 14-day journey comes to an end, leaving you with memories of Sumatra’s wildlife, rainforest trails, volcanic landscapes, rich cultural traditions, and tropical island beaches.

Important travel information

Physical fitness: This tour includes rainforest trekking, an overnight jungle camp, a volcano hike, and several long road journeys. A reasonable level of fitness and comfort with uneven terrain is recommended.

Wildlife encounters: Orangutans and other wild animals live freely in the rainforest. Sightings cannot be guaranteed. Travelers should follow guide instructions and never feed, touch, or approach wildlife.

Responsible elephant tourism: Elephant activities depend on the local facility’s availability and current welfare practices. Activities should prioritize conservation, observation, and animal welfare.

Weather and safety: Rain, river levels, volcanic conditions, and sea conditions can affect the itinerary. Activities and boat trips may be changed or cancelled when unsafe.

Pulau Banyak logistics: This itinerary includes only one full day dedicated to island exploration. The route between Samosir, Singkil, Pulau Banyak, and Medan involves substantial travel, and boat timetables must be confirmed before booking. I had a wonderful 9-day trip in North Sumatra with Rimba Sumatra. A very special thank you to Rimba, who was our main guide and driver throughout the journey, from Bukit Lawang and Berastagi to Lake Toba and Samosir Island. Rimba was always friendly, patient and caring. He drove for many hours almost every day, often 4+ hours, and still took great care of us throughout the trip. Since my English is not very good, he patiently used a translator whenever needed and even taught me English along the way. He also accompanied and guided us around Samosir on the 28th, introducing us to the local scenery and culture. After spending so many days together, we really appreciated his patience, responsibility and kindness. The 2D1N jungle trek was another unforgettable experience. Huge thanks to Tommy, Andika and Immanuel. Even in the middle of the jungle, the food was delicious and beautifully presented, which really surprised us! When my sister and I were bitten by leeches, they took very good care of us. When I became too tired to continue the original route, they were very understanding and quickly coordinated a different route for us. We always felt safe and well looked after. Thank you also to our Mount Sibayak guide, Marison Sitepu, who prepared hot tea and biscuits for us on the mountain so we could regain some energy while enjoying the beautiful sunrise. It was such a thoughtful touch. Everyone was professional, warm and genuinely caring. Thank you especially to Rimba for being with us throughout these 9 days and making the whole journey smooth, comfortable and memorable. Terima kasih banyak! We will always remember this wonderful journey in Sumatra. ❤️🇮🇩

¡100% recomendados!

The Sumatra tour and travel was truly a once in a lifetime experience! The jungle was amazing and captivating and our guide Tommy was great!! When we spotted a toucan but couldn’t see it again. He did a toucan call which the toucan responded and allow us to see it again. We did the 5D4N trek. The food was amazing truly above and beyond. The trek was not that intense and we spent a bunch of time swimming and relaxing in rivers. I recommend it to anyone!
