Bukit Lawang is a small village located at the end of the road, bordered directly with Taman National Gunung Leuser Bukit lawang. Bukit lawang is in the North Sumatra province, Indonesia. Bukit lawang is the most famous place and easiest entrance to Sumatra pristine jungle. it serves as one of many gateways to the Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bukit Lawang is renowned for its role in wildlife conservation, particularly for the Sumatran orangutans, and is a popular eco-tourism destination offering unique opportunities to explore lush rainforests and observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

Due to the flash flood on 2003, the sumatran orangutan rehabilitation facilities are no nger existed. It was washed away by the flood. It was time not to rebuild it in Bukit lawang due to the amount of people visiting the facilities. Instead, it was rebuild somewhere else still whitin the same national park.

A lot of captive orangutan has been re introduce back to the jungle. those orangutans remain around bukit lawang along with the other wild orangutan. Not just wild orangutan, but also other wildlife such as Longtail macaque or short tail macaque or Black gibbon and white headed gibbon, peacock , hormbill, sumatran sunbear, sumatran elephant, ect

Short stroll by following the path through the local plantation will take you to the rocky area where the BATCAVE is located. Batcave is something you could enjoy while climatizing. It is cave that full of Bats with stalactite formation. Short disatnce from the Batcave, There is also places like bukit lawang with smaller river called landak river. There is some bungalows and coffee shop around this area. Its also bordered directly with the same national park.

You could go around these places by bycicle or by tuk tuk. Stop over at the village friday market  if it was on Friday.

Tangkahan Hiden Paradise – Sumatra Elephant Sanctuary

Tangkahan is another entrance into gunung leuser national park. its to the nort from bukit lawang. Tangkahan is popular for sumatra Elephant rehabilitation Facility. Sumatra Elephant Sanctuary. The village directly bodered with the national park. This village used to be illegal logging village at the beginning then change over time into tourist destination. there are few accommodation in Tangkahan. People also able to participate in supporting the sumatran elephant program by involve in one their program such as bath the elephant or walk with the elephant to the national park.

It takes one hour and half drive from bukit lawang trough the palm oil plantation. Nowdays seems faster since the road are bit better.
