This 4-day trek is designed to fully immerse you in the pristine rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park. You’ll sleep in the jungle, cook meals over open fires, spot rare animals, swim beneath waterfalls, and return by tubing down the Bohorok River. This trek goes deeper than standard tours and offers more chances to see rare wildlife like gibbons, hornbills, leaf monkeys, and of course, Sumatran orangutans.

JUNGLE TREK EXPLAIN  | ITINERARY

Day 1: Welcome to the Jungle – Entering Gunung Leuser

Morning:

  • Meet your guide at your Bukit Lawang guesthouse after breakfast.

  • Receive a safety briefing, jungle trekking guidelines, and get your national park permit.

  • Start your trek into the park around 9:00 AM.

Trekking Highlights:

  • Gradual ascent into the primary rainforest.

  • Look for semi-wild orangutans, macaques, and Thomas leaf monkeys.

  • Stop at scenic viewpoints overlooking the jungle canopy.

Lunch:

  • Enjoy a jungle-style lunch of nasi goreng (fried rice), tropical fruits, and snacks.

Afternoon:

  • Continue deeper into the jungle, observing wildlife, learning about native medicinal plants, and listening to the sounds of the rainforest.

Evening:

  • Arrive at your first jungle camp—usually near a small river or waterfall.

  • Swim or wash in the stream while the cook prepares a hearty dinner.

  • Sleep in a jungle shelter (tent/tarp), under the forest canopy.

Total trekking: ~5–6 hours
Overnight: Camp 1 (near river)

Day 2: Gibbon Calls & Deeper Jungle Exploration

Morning:

  • Wake up to the calls of gibbons echoing through the forest.

  • Jungle breakfast: toast, eggs, or banana pancakes with tea or coffee.

  • Begin a full day trek further into the heart of the park, away from common tourist routes.

Trekking Highlights:

  • Steeper trails and thicker jungle.

  • Greater chance of seeing white-handed gibbons, monitor lizards, and possibly wild boars.

  • Learn jungle survival skills: how to use vines for water, make natural rope, build shelter.

Lunch:

  • Jungle lunch at a rest point under towering fig trees.

Afternoon:

  • Continue to a remote campsite, often near a jungle pool or hidden waterfall.

  • Cool off with a swim or rest in the shade.

Evening:

  • Cook dinner over a fire.

  • Night walk possible for spotting insects, frogs, or civet cats (if not too tired).

Total trekking: ~6–7 hours
Overnight: Camp 2 (deep jungle)
Wildlife focus: Gibbons, snakes, giant ants, flying squirrels (if lucky)

Day 3: Animal Tracking, Jungle Immersion & Return Route

Morning:

  • Breakfast and optional short hike to nearby ridges or hidden spots for animal tracking.

  • With luck, spot wild peacocks, monitor lizards, or signs of wild boar or sun bear (rare).

Trekking Route:

  • Take a new trail back toward Bukit Lawang, traversing hills and ridgelines with occasional wildlife sightings.

  • Guides will explain rainforest ecology and show you interesting insect species, like stick insects, termites, and butterflies.

Lunch:

  • Enjoy a packed jungle meal under a massive ficus tree or near a small waterfall.

Afternoon:

  • Arrive at final camp near the Bohorok River.

  • Wash, rest, and enjoy a relaxing evening on your last night in the wild.

Evening:

  • Celebrate with a bigger jungle meal (possibly curry, rice, fresh veggies, and fried bananas).

  • If weather allows, gather around a campfire and reflect on your jungle experience.

Overnight: Jungle Camp 3 (riverfront)
Trek Time: ~4–5 hours
Wildlife Focus: Wild boar tracks, birds, butterflies, jungle fungi

Day 4: River Tubing Adventure – Return to Bukit Lawang

Morning:

  • Final jungle breakfast.

  • Pack up camp and prep your belongings in dry bags for the river.

River Tubing (Optional & Included):

  • Board large rubber tubes for a scenic float down the Bohorok River with your guides.

  • Drift through beautiful rainforest scenery, past local children playing and monkeys in the trees.

Arrival in Bukit Lawang:

  • Arrive at your guesthouse before lunch.

  • Relax, take a hot shower, and celebrate your jungle achievement!

Go to Bukit Lawang by Public Transport

There is a bus stand at the LEFT EXIT of the AIRPORT TRAIN STATION. Choose the ALMASAR bus stand. YOu need to take this bus to MEDAN CITY ( The depot should be in PADANG BULAN near SIMPANG POS). then you need to change the bus that goes to bukit lawang from the padang bulan bus depot. This option is really cheap but too complicated take too long. Avoid it..!

 GO to Bukit Lawang by CONVENTIONAL TAXIS and ONLINE TAXIS

There are a lot of stands for online taxis on your way. Head to airport train station bulding, this is only  the way out from the main airport building. Exit to the right you will find the busess that goes to various places. Time table is applied. if you go the left you will find stands for online taxis and offline taxis with argo. There is stand for GRAB GOJEK MAXIM and BLUEBIRD. This is also a good optional way to get to bukit lawang with less hassle compared to going by bus. The assistant will help you with the online booking for the taxis. go to one of them. The rate is similiar one to the other
